And while Gohatto, based on a pair of stories by the late novelist and political commentator Ryotaro Shiba, is legible without it, this historical background is essential to a fuller understanding of the film. Gohatto’s characters and setting mav be cultural givens, but Oshima, though never mocking his material, by no means plays it straight.

Oshima Nagisa’s 1999 film Gohatto is about desire and suspicion within the ranks of the Shinsengumi during the bakumatsu period. The film can be interpreted as both an examination of the destructive effects of desire… I'm going to start this review with a sort of disclaimer, and that is that a lot of my "problems" with this film are arguably just artistic nuances that don't align with my personal tastes.

5.0. 御法度. Directed by: 大島渚 [Nagisa Oshima]. Starring: 北野武 [Takeshi Kitano], 浅野忠信 [Tadanobu Asano], 松田龍平 [Ryuhei Matsuda]. Genres: Jidaigeki, LGBT 14 Oct 2008 REVIEW: Gohatto - Nagisa Oshima (1999).
I am baffled as to why this film has had negative reviews. The plot is taut, the casting superb, the action sequences faultless and the photography excellent. Much of the films message is visual and the subtitling is more than adequate. Possibly I missed some subtleties because I do not speak fluent Japanese but I am not complaining.

"Gohatto" ("Taboo") is a fascinating film about the danger of beauty : to sum it up, a young "ephebe"'s ethereal beauty spreads like a plague, infecting a whole company of iron hard men in the process. As you must know by now, Oshima tackles in this film the forbidden subject of homosexuality among Samurais.
Review: In many respects expectations for Nagisa Oshima's film "Gohatto" were quite high. The director who gave us the infamous "In the Realm of the Senses" returns to his chair behind the camera after a 13 years break and a stroke. Gohatto is a beautiful film. The production design, lighting and cinematography combine to fill the screen with shots you want to freeze-frame and admire, while Ryuchi Sakamoto's glacial score adds a light frosting to the confection. My YouTube video on this review shall be posted in the upcoming days. For now, here is the essay. 危ない義理のできる男色 Oshima Nagisa’s 1999 film Gohatto is about desire and suspicion within the ranks of the Shinsengumi during the bakumatsu period.
